I was pleasantly surprised that this movie, not only kept my attention but was suspenseful. I was afraid this would be a low budget attempt, but it is very well done. The story was decently written, although more background about Rayburn Swanson would have been nice. The Canadian backdrop is stunningly beautiful and nearly every role was well portrayed (except Annabelle Wallis, she is so DRY, I feel like she is emotionless in every role she plays. ) Zahn McClarnon was a great cast, as was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. A series of missing girls turn up he is drug into the mystery. Rayburn Swanson is an alcoholic who spends his days drinking and patroling his Gwen Swanson Sanctuary named after his "missing daughter. " He goes to see Sheriff Alice Gustafson when a body is found floating down a local river. Not his daughter but Swanson finds that the girl has a mysterious wound on her throat. Swanson also has a state of the art camera system where he can watch from the cabin different areas of his sanctuary. and he sees some bizarre activity. A figure dressed in a shaggy tree camouflage outfit is chasing a young girl. Swanson is attacked by the disguised bushy person but ends up finding the girl. Back at his cabin both he and the girl are attacked by the same figure. The first plot twist happens here. The sheriff has some secrets of her own. The hunt is now turned toward the sheriff's odd brother who hides out on the neighboring Indian Reservation. Swanson is wounded and ends up seeking off the grid medical treatment from the doctor who works at the reservation. So it should end here but there is a second great plot twist that sets Swanson toward the real killer and the "whys" fall into place. This is better than I ever expected. The foggy chases through the sanctuary where the killer hunts his prey are excellent. The use of the video cameras to watch the sanctuary and even the nearly invisible killer who can blend in adds to the suspense. I liked it. I give it 4 STARS~ NIKOLAJ COSTER-WALDAU as Swanson was excellent. The flawed hero. ANNABELLE WALLIS as Gustafson was good but her focus on her psycho brother detracted from the story. Who would have thought to put a drunk guy, a dog, a strip club, and a scary basement all in the same movie? After the final episodes of Game of Thrones, you thought Coster-Waldau coudn't sink any lower. You were wrong. Overall this movie isn't a prize, but it does very well what it sets out to do. It is a dark, tense movie where you feel the real life stakes the characters have and you are always worried about the harm that could befall anyone. That sense of real consequence for everyone in the movie makes the actions very enjoyable and feel grounded in reality, a mark that a lot of thrillers miss. It is also well acted by the main cast. 4 stars out of 5 instead of 5 out of 5 since there are some serious plot holes and missed opportunities, as these types of movies often have, so no serious discredit to this one. NCW plays his character very consistently throughout and helps drive the pacing of the movie forward even better with yet another believable acting job where you forget you're watching a movie (when he is on screen). Reminiscent of his role in Headhunters Definitely worth a rental Great flick with an original story in a beautiful setting with well cast characters. I'd watch it again! So many ridiculous aspects to this movie it was frustrating to watch. Completely unbelievable. If I hadn’t paid for it I would have turned it off 30 minutes in. It didn’t get better.
